This teahouse specializes in Shimabara’s specialty, kanzarashi (white rice balls). It is an old private house café with a pond with 50 liters of spring water per second and a building that blends the Japanese and Western styles from the Meiji era.
Kanzarashi is made by soaking individually rolled white balls in spring water to soften their texture. The kanzarashi at Mizuyashiki is lightly sweetened and light, matcha (powdered green tea) and coffee brewed with spring water can be enjoyed.
On the second floor of the building, 1,000 beckoning cats from all over Japan are on display. It is a sacred place for beckoning cat enthusiasts as a power spot that invites good fortune. Located in the arcade between Shimabara Castle and the town where carp swim, it is a good place to take a break during a stroll in Shimabara.
