Japanese candle making and painting experience

Honda Mokuro Kogyosho is the only wax manufacturing plant in Japan that produces wood wax from the fruit of the Japanese haze tree using a “tamajime-style press.
In 1792, the massive landslide known as the “Shimabara Great Disturbance and Higo Troubles” caused approximately 15,000 casualties and inflicted devastating damage on the Shimabara Domain. To aid in the reconstruction efforts, the domain encouraged the cultivation of Japanese haze trees, and the wood wax extracted from their fruits became an important industry, significantly contributing to the domain’s economic recovery.
At Honda Mokuro Kogyosho, where tradition is preserved, you can enjoy a “Japanese Candle Making Experience” and a “Candle Painting Experience” where you can actually draw pictures on Japanese candles. The unique and cute Japanese candles are also recommended as souvenirs. You can do both experiences at the same time, and you can also tour the factory.
